“Chris, I think I’m going to change my job. I’m just not happy. What do you think?”
This is a much more common question and a thought that I think goes through people's minds a lot more regularly than we care to admit.
The thing is that all too often, I see people change jobs, change careers, and change partners, thinking that is the thing that will make the difference.
What people often fail to do is work on themselves. All they tend to do is take the same person, with the same issues and insecurities, into another situation.
It’s like the person that said: “I have had lots of car crashes, but it is always people going into the back of me.”
If people are constantly crashing into them, then the common denominator is themselves. They need to look at what they are doing rather than blaming other people.
Being able to look deep into ourselves to see if we are the problem is the first thing we need to do.
And I totally get it. It is far easier to think it is the fault of others rather than ourselves.
