I wish I had been given a £1 for every time I have heard this. Each year people cut out carbs with the hope that they will shred fat 'before Marbs’ (or as we can’t go anywhere; Margate!)
Here are some reasons why consuming carbs could actually be a good idea.
Carbs are our bodies preferred energy source and you will find that they will contribute heavily to you having a really good workout, which in turn will help put you in a bigger caloric deficit which will illicit the fat loss goals that you are looking for.
Having a meal containing carbs before bed can actually make you sleepy. Have you ever had a big meal and then fallen into a carb coma where all you want to do is snooze (me too) - so why not utilise that and consume the carbs before bedtime.
Some carbohydrates (not all) contain fibre. Fibre has some really good health benefits such as helping move food through the body and keep you feeling fuller for longer.
And last but by no means least they are bloody tasty! An awful lot of the foods that we love are filled with carbs and I’m not just talking about rice and potato.
Evidently crisps and biscuits and cakes also contain carbs and they taste ok too.
So as you can see, there are some really good reasons why you should keep carbs in your diet - that does not mean that you must fill your plates with carbs. Just like fats they are needed within the body but also need to be monitored and regulated.
Being in a calorie deficit is still the biggest goal that you should be aiming for and then hitting your protein target. After that fats and carbs can, in most instances, be down to your own personal preference, with the caveat that single ingredient, nutrient dense foods should be your go-to.
